Olympia, Les Contes d’Hoffmann

The Gondoliers involves a pair of handsome Venetian gondola oarsmen and a mix up of identities at birth. Along the way to resolving the confusion, Gilbert skewers issues of social equality and the class system with his usual brilliant wit and groundbreaking lyrics. When The Gondoliers premiered in London in 1889, it was given the highest critical acclaim from local media and from England’s Queen Victoria herself, who was so moved that she wrote extensively in her personal diary of the show’s inescapable charm. One journalist reviewing the production wrote, plainly, “it is not opera or play. It is simply entertainment – the most exquisite entertainment we have ever seen.”

While most Gilbert & Sullivan operettas are strictly set within the confines of the composer’s home country of England, The Gondoliers score was widely influenced by a visit Sullivan made to Italy in 1888. Italian folk dances such as the tarantella and saltarello jostle with other vivacious national dances such as the cachucha (a fast gypsy dance from Spain) and operatic influences including Bellini, Bizet, Handel and Mozart.

Everyone has been so supportive with their travels up to San Francisco to hear me sing and I thought it would be amazing to come back down to Thousand Oaks and sing before starting my Graduate degree. Tom and Grace Hollow, my incredible parents, are opening up their house for this event and I will be joined by Jordan Eldredge, Thomas Hollow, and Kevin Su Fukagawa. We will be performing an afternoon recital of operatic arias, musical theater songs, and duets. There will be light appetizers and beverages; it is sure to be a fun-filled family event!

This is a fundraising recital to replenish the funds I used to fly across the country to audition, so donations will be welcome at the event. In addition, we will be selling some of my CDs and DVDs but really, I just want to see you! Come join us for a fun daytime recital.

Chelsea will be performing the role of First Bridesmaid as well as covering the role of Angelina (The Plaintiff).

Last performed by the Lamplighters in 1997, Trial by Jury is Gilbert & Sullivan’s perfect little musical comedy about a jilted bride (Jennifer Ashworth) suing her would-be groom (John Brown). A one-act gem, Trial matches Gilbert’s delicious satire on the legal system with some of Sullivan’s most inventive and tuneful music, performed by the Lamplighters orchestra. Their second collaboration, first produced in London in 1875, Trial by Jury, is distinctive from the others in that it is sung through in its entirety with no spoken dialog. Featuring Jonathan Spencer as the Judge (and a good Judge too!)

We are thrilled to announce that, with the support of generous grants, we have scheduled a special student matinee of Trial by Jury (with full 21-piece orchestra) on Monday, March 14, at 11:00am, at Presentation Theater, at the very affordable price of $5 per student/teacher/adult chaperone.

Chelsea Hollow is very excited to make her Lamplighter’s debut! In this tale of intrigue and betrayal set in the foreboding Tower of London, a political prisoner is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and catastrophe and hilarity ensue as others attempt to release him from the devious plot and secure his freedom. Featuring a lovesick jailor, a lovely young woman trapped in a marriage to an unknown man, and a jester who has lost his sense of humor, this dark comedy is the closest thing to grand opera in the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire. Combining poignancy and tragedy with humor to an extent not seen in any other Gilbert libretto, and boasting some of Sullivan’s finest work, Yeomen is considered the best of the canon by many G&S fans.
